Turn a steep, slipping bank into level lawn, garden and patio space
A steep bank at the back of a section swallows space that could be lawn, garden or patio, and every heavy downpour shifts more soil down the slope. That moving ground eats into planting beds, blocks paths and pushes against fence lines.
Lifestyle Fences builds timber retaining walls that hold the bank in place and step it into level ground you can actually use. Contact us for a site visit and a free quote.

Timber retaining walls and balustrades built across Auckland and surrounding areas from our Glenfield showroom and Wairau Valley workshop
Timber retaining walls built for sloped sections and terraced gardens
Nothing is built to a standard size, because no two banks behave the same. Levels, soil conditions and the fall across the site all shape the design.
Where the fall allows, a long slope is better handled as two lower walls stepped as terraces rather than one tall face: the load is spread and you gain two usable levels.
The finished ground can become level lawn, a garden bed, a patio or raised planters along a boundary. Where a wall runs along a boundary, fencing is often built on top, so the retaining and the paling or shiplap fencing line through correctly.
Timber balustrades and handrails for decks and stairs
A balustrade takes real sideways load over years of use, so posts are fixed into the deck framing itself rather than surface-mounted to the decking boards.
Vertical bar, picket-style infill is the most requested design and suits most homes, while trellis-style infill uses workshop-made panels where an elevated deck calls for screening from a neighbour.
Baluster spacing, rail heights and timber handrails all follow New Zealand standards, whether the balustrade is retrofitted to an existing deck or built in from the framing stage on a new timber deck.
We work in timber only, so glass balustrades are not something we offer.
Site measure, access check and one free quote
Pricing follows a site visit, not a phone estimate. Levels, ground conditions and access are assessed on the day, including narrow side gates, steep drops and limited machine room, so those constraints are built into the quote from the start.
Photos or plans sent with an enquiry can help identify access constraints before the visit. Once levels, ground conditions and machine access are checked, those constraints can be accounted for. You're welcome to call in at 95B Wairau Road to handle timber samples and see our trellis panels.
Frequently asked questions for Retaining Walls & Balustrades
Timber is a natural material with give in it, so a wall can take small shifts in the bank without failing. Concrete block and steel are more rigid, and under the same ground movement they are more prone to cracking or being pushed out of line.
No. Any council consent required is arranged by you before work starts. Once approvals are in place, levels, ground conditions and access are measured on site and the wall is designed around your slope.
Yes. A finished wall can carry matching timber fencing along the top where boundary height matters, so the wall and fence read as one structure rather than two separate jobs.
Vertical bar, picket-style infill is the most requested design, and trellis-style infill uses workshop-made panels where an elevated deck needs screening. We work in timber only - glass balustrades are not something we do.
Pricing follows a site visit rather than a phone estimate, so access constraints sit in the quote rather than turning up mid-build. Photos or plans attached to an enquiry help beforehand. Calls and quotes are free, with a reply expected within one business day.
